The Mentor Skill-Gym

When you want to be capable of doing something with your body, you don’t sit down and read about it. You go to a gym, playground or a dojo and put yourself to work… Don’t you?! Similarly, skilling yourself for dealing with the challenges of your workplace is also a mind-body issue, that requires a holistic approach to habituate yourself with new, desirable behaviour. Behaviours don’t get habituated in you through reading or listening, they happen when you go through the cycle of knowing-learning-trying-assessing-habituating.

The Mentor Skill-Gym uses the Virtual Flipped Classroom Methodology to ensure effective embedding of Success Behaviours that deliver outcomes. There are two critical dimensions in learning that ensure real time success. They are…

  1. Identifying appropriate behaviours to habituate to, that can help you deliver the outcomes you want. This requires careful research and curation.
  2. Using an appropriate & effective method of learning to acquire these success behaviours & habituating to them.

Mentor Skill-Gym addresses both the above criteria. This is a carefully curated set of learning programs that deliver specific success behaviours in a structured, well-paced manner so that you can go through the learning process joyfully as well as efficiently. You can learn, habituate and perform more effectively.

Virtual Flipped Classroom – an effective learning model

 Why Virtual Flipped Classroom?

All learning ideally, should be about change – a change that happens within us resulting in new habituated behaviours that we can produce at will, whenever required. Learning requires us to travel from the known to the unknown (which can be scary to say the least) and then back to ‘new’ known, repeating this cycle endlessly until more of the ‘unknown’ slowly becomes the ‘known.’  It is an exciting journey, albeit a daunting one sometimes. More so when one is trying to change one’s behaviours/skills!

Learning is not merely Knowing. Learning is far beyond knowing. Reflecting, Knowing, Comprehending, Trying, Reviewing, Repeating & Habituating – all of those results in learning! The Mentor Virtual Flipped Classroom model takes into account all these elements to develop and deliver programs that aim to not just impart but to imbibe.

Therefore, Virtual Flipped classroom is not a single touchpoint affair with the learner. Instead, it is a multi-stimuli ongoing engagement over two months where learners interact with the trainer, amongst themselves, and with their stakeholders through structured exercises that help them reflect and gain perspectives. Virtual Flipped Classroom learning journey comprises of 8-steps. The core philosophy is to allow a gradual, step-by-step approach to helping learners change. This ensures better convenience, feasibility and effectiveness for both the learner and his organisation.

How does the Virtual Flipped Classroom Work?

Each of the 8 stages of the VFCR model have scientific basis that promotes effective learning for the learner as well as impact for the organization. Here is how it works…

Pre-Classroom Reading Material – Benefits

Saves time - Giving all the necessary information ahead frees up adequate time in the classroom where the focus is on the “how” of the Success Behaviour rather than the “what” of it.

This is why we call our model Flipped Classroom – instead of spending our classroom time on knowledge download, we would rather focus on its application in real life scenarios.

Lays a good foundation - Reading ahead also prepares the learners’ mind to accept better what follows in the classroom sessions – much like preparing the soil before sowing the seeds. It also helps the learner come with specific doubts or clarifications, even apprehensions about applying the Success Behaviour.

PCM helps learners come prepared with their doubts/clarifications. This helps build better conviction for trial of the new Success Behaviour.

Benefits of QWERLs

Better buy-in: QWERLs provoke thinking. This helps bring forth any latent doubts that the learner might have regarding the Success Behaviour which can then be handled in the Classroom session. This ensures better clarity and buy-in in the learner’s mind.

Openness to learning: QWERLs require one to give reasons for choosing ‘True’ or ‘False.’  Thinking about one’s reasoning for the chosen response helps us reflect on our own logic and how we arrived at that response. This helps make our thinking visible to others and, at the same time, be receptive to the reasoning of others.

Build conviction for trial: QWERLs help break initial barriers to learning and subsequent barriers to active trial of the success behaviour. It improves the chances of the Success Behaviour being tried at the workplace.

Flipped Classrooms (FCR) Benefits

Focus of the FCR is on application of the Success Behaviour. Therefore, FCRs bring about the transition from ‘knowing how’ to ‘showing how.’  FCRs -

Provide better clarity about the Success Behaviour and its implementation.

Improve the probability of the Success Behaviour being habituated by the learner at work.

Learning Enabling and Application Project Benefits

Completion of LEAP often requires the learners to engage with other stakeholders in the system. As such, LEAP fosters the ability to reach out, engage and seek feedback proactively from others. Other benefits include:

Structured habituation of success behaviour leading to improved performance

Increased learner confidence in acquiring new behaviours/skills at workplace

Improved objectivity in looking at problem situations at the workplace and devising solutions

Final Assessment Benefits

Final Assessment gives a clear picture of learner’s readiness for the success behaviours.

Helps the organisation plan how to make the program more beneficial.

Helps the learner assess his understanding and application of the Success Behaviour under varied scenarios.
